We all know how it feels after a bad night’s sleep — foggy brain, drifting focus, maybe even a short fuse. But new research shows what’s really happening inside your head during those moments: your brain may literally be trying to wash itself clean. While you sleep, a clear liquid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flows rhythmically through your brain, washing away the waste that builds up during the day. Games can be a valuable part of mental well-being at any age. A new study looked at how playing different types of video games affects people's ability to remember things and ignore distractions. The study included 209 young adults (18–30 years old) and 181 older adults (60–81 years old). Participants were asked about their gaming habits and then given a memory task. Here's what the researchers found: Young adults who mainly played strategy and action games were better at remembering things than non-players. But when looking more closely, only the strategy part of the games helped improve memory and the ability to ignore distractions. Action games didn't have the same effect.  Playing puzzle games helped older adults remember things just as well as younger adults. A study published today in journal Nature introduced a non-invasive semantic decoder based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and technology similar to the one powering ChatGPT. The decoder can convert a person's brain activity when they are listening to or silently imagine telling a story into a continuous stream of text. The method created by the team from the University of Texas at Austin may enable people to speak with their minds.  Given novel brain recordings, this decoder generates intelligible word sequences that recover the meaning of perceived speech, imagined speech and even silent videos, demonstrating that a single decoder can be applied to a range of tasks.
